Winter Hot Tub Maintenance: The Complete Guide to Protecting Your Hot Tub in Cold Weather

Winter hot tub maintenance is essential when temperatures drop outdoors.  Freezing weather can cause cracked pipes, damaged pumps, cloudy water, and costly repairs. Whether you plan to keep your hot tub running (recommended) or need to winterize your spa completely, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to protect your investment.

Pool Mart also proudly services every hot tub that we sell year round, so we personally stay with you for the life of your hot tub.

If you’re searching for how to maintain a hot tub in winter, how to winterize a hot tub, or how to prevent hot tub freeze damage, you’re in the right place.

Why Winter Hot Tub Maintenance Is So Important

Cold weather puts stress on every part of your hot tub system. When water freezes, it expands — which can crack plumbing lines, damage heaters, and split fittings.

Proper hot tub winter maintenance helps you:

  • Prevent frozen hot tub pipes

  • Avoid expensive freeze damage

  • Improve energy efficiency

  • Extend the life of your hot tub

  • Keep your water clean and safe

Ignoring winter hot tub care can turn a small oversight into a major repair bill.

Option 1: Keep Your Hot Tub Running During The Winter

Many homeowners use their hot tubs more during the winter than they do over the summer, and we strongly recommend keeping your hot tub running unless you are out of town for an extended period of time.  If you keep your hot tub open year round, follow these essential winter hot tub maintenance tips.

1. Maintain Proper Water Chemistry All Winter

Cold weather doesn’t stop bacteria from growing. In fact, imbalanced water can damage your heater and plumbing.

Test your water once a week.  Try to stick to the same day every week and maintain:

  • pH: 7.2–7.8

  • Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm

  • Proper sanitizer levels

Consistent water testing is key for safe and efficient hot tub maintenance in winter.  If you need help, we’re happy to offer in-store water testing.  For an easier watercare routine, ask us about Simple Blue (for any hot tub) or Freshwater Salt (newer Hot Spring Spas only).

2. Prevent Your Hot Tub from Freezing

Your hot tub should stay between 100–104°F during use. Newer hot tubs include freeze protection, but you should still monitor it closely during extreme cold.

To prevent frozen pipes:

  • Check water temperature daily

  • Ensure pumps are circulating properly by running a jet cycle or a clean cycle.

  • Clear snow around and on top of your hot tub

If there’s a power outage in freezing temperatures, make sure the breaker is on inside of the sub-panel connected to your hot tub.  If the power is out at the hot tub, contact us for service.

3. Protect Your Hot Tub Cover from Snow and Ice

Your spa cover plays a major role in energy efficiency during the winter.

  • Remove heavy snow build-up carefully using a soft brush or broom to avoid puncturing the cover

  • Inspect for cracks or waterlogging

  • Ensure a tight seal and make sure the skirt underneath the cover is fully extended and not bunched in any spots.

  • Check that your cover is properly seated on the hot tub and that your front cover straps are in place.

  • Inspect hinge-seals and heat-seam areas for early signs of wear, cracking or gaps.

A damaged cover can significantly increase heating costs and strain your system.  The average lifespan of a hot tub cover is 5 years, and we recommend ordering a new cover when your existing cover starts to get heavy.

4. Clean Your Filters Weekly

Winter use often means more oils, lotions, and debris entering the water.

For proper hot tub care in winter:

  • Clean and rinse filters every week

  • Give your filters a deep clean with FC-5 Filter Spray or an acid bath 2-3 times a year

  • Replace worn filters as needed.  The average lifespan for most filters is 3 years.  Hot Spring Tri-X filters will last up to 5 years.

Clean filters improve water clarity and reduce heater strain.  They are your first line of defense for any debris in the spa.

Option 2: How to Winterize a Hot Tub (If You’re Closing It)

As a rule of thumb, it’s better for your hot tub to run it year round.  If you’ve never winterized your spa before, we advise hiring a professional and taking comprehensive notes so that you can do it yourself the next time.  Improperly shutting down your hot tub is one of the leading causes of freeze damage.

Step 1: Turn Off Power and Drain Completely

Shut off power at the breaker before draining. Remove all water from the shell.

Step 2: Blow Out All Plumbing Lines

This is the most important step in winterizing a hot tub.

Use a wet/dry vacuum or air compressor to remove trapped water from:

  • Jets

  • Plumbing lines

  • Pumps

  • Heater housing

Even small amounts of water can freeze and crack pipes.

Step 3: Remove and Store Filters Indoors

Clean filters thoroughly and store them in a dry location.

Step 4: Add Hot Tub Antifreeze (If Recommended)

Use only hot tub-safe antifreeze for additional freeze protection.

Step 5: Secure The Cover

Lock the cover tightly and consider using a winter cover wrap for added insulation and protection.

Common Winter Hot Tub Problems (And How to Avoid Them)

Avoid these costly mistakes:

  • Ignoring small leaks before freezing weather

  • Skipping out on using chemicals because you aren’t using the hot tub often as well as regular water testing

  • Letting snow accumulate on the cover

  • Failing to check on your hot tub during extreme cold

Preventative winter hot tub care is far less expensive than repairs.

How to Lower Hot Tub Energy Costs in Winter

To improve hot tub efficiency in cold weather:

  • Keep the cover sealed at all times

  • Lower temperature slightly when not in use

  • Maintain balanced water chemistry

An efficient hot tub costs far less to operate than repairing freeze damage.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re keeping your spa running or preparing it for storage, proper winter maintenance is essential. Protecting your hot tub from freezing temperatures ensures it runs efficiently, safely, and reliably all season long.

Taking the time now to maintain or winterize your hot tub can save you thousands in repairs — and give you the confidence that your investment is protected.
